About Sasha Tai

Sasha Tai is a self-taught painter who is a 2nd generation Chinese-American from Redmond, Washington.

In 2023 Sasha was granted a solo art exhibition when the Executive Director of Redmond’s Centro Cultural Mexicano noticed Sasha painting there.  Sasha had brought in an oil portrait she was working on to Centro's open teen art studio to complete. The Executive Director was deeply impressed with what she saw and asked Sasha if she had completed other paintings.  She responded that she had completed many.  This is how Sasha  was able to debut her extensive artworks at 17 years old with a public solo exhibition.

Since her inaugural exhibition, Sasha has fully developed and solidified her signature painting style which combines her proficiency in both oil and watercolor painting mediums.  The result of combining oil and watercolor techniques into her pieces gives her paintings a dynamic and bold yet also an ethereal, spiritual-like quality.

Sasha is currently a 2nd Year Art major at Cornish College of the Arts at Seattle University.

Artist Statement:

As an artist and observer, I believe that there are so many ways that our thought patterns and internal rhythms parallel the cycles of nature and invoke this sense of liveliness. Through my art, I aspire to portray this feeling as a whole in not just the portrait, but the entire painting. In particular, I’ve always been drawn to painting portraits because of how much emotion can be expressed through the facial expressions of the models, invoking feelings that wouldn’t be able to be fully conveyed through a landscape or a still life. Additionally, mixing and connecting different plants, elements, and objects to the people in my paintings  represents this inherent connectivity between ourselves and the world around us, something that is able to be shown in many different ways. I aim to shine a light on things, both physically and conceptually, that I feel we should pay more attention to as a society.
